As I said in my previous blog, I helped my brother Dave and his business partner develop this over a number of years. It was quite a journey and it is not very long ago I said to him, “I think we’re there”. Dave replied, “I know we’re there. I am right back to where I started on the first day in my career as all the dots are now joined. And you know Steve”, he said, “It’s all about quality. When I first started, all I wanted to do was do a quality job for our clients and do a quality job for my employers”.
The next day I asked Dave, “what is the philosophy behind this?” I knew this would get his cogs spinning and this is the refined version – “Give people the skills, confidence and freedom and they will do quality work.” Dave built a successful career out of just wanting to give people the confidence to do their job.
This is not just theory but decades of proven practice as Dave was the ‘go to’ man in his statewide organization to get things working and deliver productivity. I have come to learn that applications use algorithms to mimic human behavior and the really good apps enable anyone to mimic the behavior of the best specialist in a particular field. When you think about it, skills, confidence, freedom, and quality makes logical sense. Freedom though is the key to unlocking potential. I said to one of my clients, a gifted entrepreneur who started out his working life as a shearer when we were discussing the freedom aspect one day, “When did the shearing team you were in do their best work? When did the shed really hum?” George replied, “When the boss left the shed and he was not watching over us.” That freedom gave the team the opportunity to ‘cut loose’ and really put their skills to work.
